Abstract
The cytochemical properties of pit plugs of both bangiophycean and florideophycean red algae were studied using light and electron microscopic techniques. The 2 major structural components of the plugs, the core and caps, differ in composition. The plug core was stained by several procedures for protein localization. Polysaccharide and lipid stains had no discernible effect on the plug core, whereas 1 layer of the plug cap was stained by an ultrastructural procedure for polysaccharide localization. This publication has 6 references indexed in Scilit:
