Abstract
Alternating Direction Implicit (ADI) methods are widely used for the approximation of shallow water equations. For calibration the size of the timestep is often based upon the so‐called propagation factor. This factor gives only a minor indication of the numerical propagation speed of the tidal wave. It is shown that the numerical propagation speed depends entirely on the geometry and the bathymetry combined with the spatial gridsize and the timestep. Another factor that influences the propagation of the tidal wave in a computational model is the numerical simulation of intertidal flats. Numerical examples are given.Keywords
