DISTRIBUTION IN LEADS I, II AND III OF POTENTIALS APPLIED TO THE SURFACE OF THE HEART

Abstract
Potential differences applied across the surfaces of the right and left ventricles cause an upward deflection in the standard leads of the electrocardiogram when the negative plate is on the left ventricle. Potential differences applied across the centers of the anterior surface of the right ventricle and the posterior surface of the left ventricle affect preponderantly lead III of the electrocardiogram. The projection in the horizontal plane of the line joining these centers is roughly parallel to the longitudinal axis of the body. Potential differences applied across the centers of the anterior surface of the left ventricle and the posterior surface of the right ventricle are recorded preponderantly in lead I. The projection in the horizontal plane of the line joining these centers is roughly parallel to the transverse axis of the body.
