Abstract
Xylose absorption was studied in asymptomatic African children in Liberia, an area where clinical tropical sprue is not known to occur, and in Americans resident in Liberia and New York City. Twenty (28.6%) of the 70 Liberian children excreted less xylose than any of the Americans. The incidence of malabsorption was similar to that recently found in Liberian adults. The subclinical, small intestinal disorder widespread in the developing countries of the world probably begins early in life. Keywords
