Abstract
The concept that an enzyme must catalyze strictly stereospecific reactions even when this specificity was not required by the structural relation of substrate to product was studied. This was considered in historical terms and nonsymmetrical synthesis from a symmetrical molecule such as with squalene from farnesyl pyrophosphate. Keywords
