Abstract
After 5 yr of regular trapping in a sahelian-soudanian area in Senegal, demographic data are given on reproduction, longevity and recruitement by the 2 most important species (2000 individuals for each): M. erythroleucus and T. gracilis. During this period (1975-1981) monthly densities of rodents fluctuated widely (from 0.1/ha to > 100/ha) and 2 outbreaks were observed by these 2 species. Population dynamics of both species are very different; M. erythroleucus has very large litters (12-16), high mortality during 1st wk of life and none survive > 2 yr. Reproduction of the former species is closely related to the rainy season but that of the 2nd species is less seasonal. On a 4 yr period, the net rate of increase was .apprx. 1 for the 2 species, i.e., during this period the populations were stable.
