Abstract
Resistance heating may be used to release the tension in a highly stressed wire and thus produce small displacements. This principle has been employed in a device for tuning the length of a fused-silica etalon. Force changes of over 540 N were produced with only 5 W of control power required. A servo length-control system incorporating this driving element operated with an 80 ms response time.
