Abstract
A new method permits the determination of diffraction losses, scattering losses and small-signal gain from the time delay between starting the pumping and onset of laser oscillation. Combined with a measurement of output power, this method provides extraction efficiency and excitation efficiency, and this detailed knowledge of all parameters allows a systematic optimization of the laser efficiency. Keywords
