Quantitation of Casts in Urine Sediment

Abstract
The detection of casts in the urine sediment is an important clue to the presence of renal disease. Opinions vary regarding the proper urinalysis method and the effect of alterations in urine composition on the urine sediment (1-4). In an effort to improve the diagnostic value of routine urinalysis, we studied the effects of urine pH, osmolality, and centrifugation time on the number of casts.
