Abstract
The detection of casts in the urine sediment is an important clue to the presence of renal disease. Opinions vary regarding the proper urinalysis method and the effect of alterations in urine composition on the urine sediment (1-4). In an effort to improve the diagnostic value of routine urinalysis, we studied the effects of urine pH, osmolality, and centrifugation time on the number of casts. The results showed a highly significant inverse correlation between the urine pH and the number of casts seen. Variation of urinary osmolality or centrifugation time was without significant effect.
