To the Editor: We are reporting the finding of an elevated level of serum alpha-fetoprotein in a pregnant woman with rheumatoid arthritis, who subsequently gave birth to a normal child, in the hope that studies may be undertaken to establish the frequency of such elevations in other women and to ascertain their cause (e.g., placental vasculitis leading to increased diffusion of alpha-fetoprotein in the maternal bloodstream).A 31-year-old primigravida was referred for genetic counseling because of her concern about the potentially teratogenic effects of the medications she was taking for symptomatic control of severe rheumatoid arthritis, which she had had . . .
