Mild Neonatal Illness Associated with Heavy Enterovirus Infection

Abstract
SEVERE and often fatal neonatal illness has frequently been reported in association with infections with Coxsackie B and occasionally other enteroviruses.1 2 3 4 Less emphasized but also frequently noted have been mild neonatal illnesses due to enterovirus infections.1 , 2 , 5 During the summer and fall of 1963, we had the opportunity to study a number of children who were assumed to have enterovirus infections. Among these were 2 newborn infants who had mild, nonspecific, febrile illnesses but from whom considerable amounts of virus were recovered from multiple culture sites. The clinical, virologic and serologic results of these studies are reported here.Materials and Methods . . .
