Abstract
The function of the various layers of the enamel organ in relation to the different stages of the enamel matrix evolution is discussed. The tooth buds of upper incisors of rats were grown continuously and analyzed using caryometric, cytometric and histochemical methods. The inner epithelium is chiefly responsible for the primary and early enamel formation. It probably differentiates early enamel into transitional enamel, and participates in the processes of mineralization of these 2 latter stages of the enamel matrix. The stellate -reticulum and the stratum -intermedium responsible for the differentiation of young enamel into transitional enamel participates in the enamel matrix clacification.
