Abstract
Condensation products of reductone, CH(OH):C(OH).CHO were prepd. with p-aminobenzoic acid, sulfathiazone, sulfapyridine, sulfamezathene, sulfamethyl-thiazole, soluseptasine, maphenide, sulfaguanidine and related sulfonamides. The condensation product or reductone and sulfathiazole is decomposed by p-aminobenzoic acid but sul-fathiazole does not decompose the condensation product with p-aminobenzoic acid. It is suggested that sulfonamides act by uniting with reductone during the active phase of normal bacterial metabolism, and that p-aminobenzoic acid is the normal cell metabolite which unites with reductone and stabilizes it for use in the cell. Maphenide alone replaces p-aminobenzoic acid from its combination with reductone, explaining the fact that it alone does not show a time-log in its operation. Keywords
