Rapid Monitoring of Hydrocarbon Blending Stocks in Modified Aviation Turbine Fuels

Abstract
Chemical engineers have modified the physical and chemical properties of aviation turbine fuels by diluting the base fuel with hydrocarbon blending stocks. Programmed temperature gas chromatography on a fused silica capillary column was utilized to determine the concentrations of three hydrocarbon blending stocks in JP-4 jet fuel. For JP-4 turbine fuel, the analysis is relatively fast (20 min) yet demonstrates excellent accuracy and precision. A general procedure is also described that is applicable to both simple and complex solutions of several blending stocks in mixes of different base fuels.
