Abstract

To the Editor:— The editorial comment in The Journal, April 21, page 1059, discussed Myers' use of the methylene blue test for bilirubin in the urine. In Correspondence May 26, page 308, appeared a communication from Watson, Meads and Castle in which the value of the test as used by Myers was questioned because of its lack of specificity for bilirubin. For the past one and one-half years the methylene blue test has been under investigation in several laboratories engaged in the study of infectious hepatitis under the auspices of the Commission on Measles and Mumps, Army Epidemiological Board, Preventive Medicine Service, Office of the Surgeon General, U. S. Army. Our experience with a modified methylene blue test in several epidemics of infectious hepatitis and in hepatitis produced experimentally in human volunteers has indicated that the modified test is capable of providing valuable information concerning the presence of bilirubin in
