Characteristics of Current Social Stressors

Abstract
A major goal of a cross-sectional survey of 2,299 Chicago adults has been to assess various current social stressors prevalent in a normal population. Herein, we review our conceptualization of stress, outline the development of nine stressor scales, and list their content and scale characteristics. We define current social stressors as “those circumstances or conditions of daily social roles which are generally considered to be problematic or undesirable.” This definition differs from the usual, in that our stressors are tied to a social role, are on-going experiences instead of unitary events, and are commonly regarded as problematic or undesirable. Relationships between these social stressors scales and major demographic variables are explored using multiple regression analysis.
