Abstract
The only effective way of arresting ventricular fibrillation in a heart, which has been thrown into that condition by an electric shock or other cause, is to send sufficient current through the heart to contract it. A portable external defibrillator has been developed which uses a simulated alterating current of one cycle supplied by capacitor discharges. It has been proved effective in bringing the fibrillating heart to rest, and has not injured a normal beating heart. Keywords
