Abstract
A formalism to obtain a general relation between a tensor (Born-Von Karman) and a valence force-field is presented. The derived formulas can be used to cast additional physical meaning on the parameters of the force field adopted. The case of diamond is explicitly worked out and formulae given by Musgrave and Pople (1962) are extended to include an additional important parameter of the valence force-field.Keywords
