Abstract
A critical review of the present state of knowledge concerning the genetics of sex and of intersexuality. The observations and interpretations of the various workers are brought together, and it is shown that the genetic causes of intersexuality may be classified as follows (1) Disharmony in the distribution of the genotype; i.e., gynandromorphism, balanced intersexuality in Drosophila. (2) Disharmony in the composition of the genotype, i.e. "gene" for intersexuality in Drosophila; serial intersexuality in Lymantria; and the type of intersexuality occurring in the mammal, which is due to abnormality in either the time or the mode of differentiation of the gonads.
