Abstract
Two axons are identified in each mandibular canal of the aphid, a condition which had been predicted almost since the turn of the century. The identification of previously unknown stylet ultrastructures permits proposal of a “one cell-one stylet” theory of origin which may apply to all insects with piercing-sucking mouthparts. The functions of some of these ultrastructures are discussed.
