Abstract
The Mössbauer effect is measured in natural and synthetic α‐FeOOH samples in an attempt to resolve discrepancies between results reported in the literature. The present results indicate that the deviations can be explained by the presence of water in some of the samples. The Néel temperature is found to be (367 ± 2) °K. The measured temperature dependence of the Mössbauer effect suggests that the spin‐relaxation time in α‐FeOOH is of the same order as the lifetime of the 14.4 keV excited level in Fe57 in synthetic samples. Keywords
