Interpreting the past1

Abstract
This article discusses the role of interpretation in research in the history of education. Drawing on ideas and methodological suggestions from Paul Ricoeur and Hans‐Georg Gadamer, it suggests a way to deal with the matter of validity in interpretation. As a case‐study example, the article interprets an excerpt from the record of a witch trial in Stockholm in the 1670s.
