Abstract
In order to explain the deflection characteristics when two contacting machined surfaces are subjected to normal and shear forces, a simple surface model is proposed. This model assumes that contact is in the elastic regime, and it is analysed for various loading sequences of the normal and applied shear forces. The results show excellent qualitative agreement with the experimentally observed characteristics. An attempt to compare the results on a quantitative basis is also made. Keywords
