Abstract
The ultrastructural features of Hemiselmis brunnescens and Hemiselmis virescens are described and compared with the known and some new details of Hemiselmis refuscens. The distinctive morphology of these cells is compared with observations on other genera and discussed with reference to the validity of the Hemiselmidaceae, a definition for members of the genus Hemiselmis and other possible taxonomic implications for the Cryptophyceae.
