Abstract
Inmate-initiated assaultive incidents reported by staff in a large correctional system over period of 9 years were subjected to regression and time series analyses. The time series analysis revealed that the assault data curve followed a nonlinear path Several of the significant correlates of inmate-initiated assault (young age, Black-to-White ratio) were anticipated, whereas several others were not (population density staff inexperience). These outcomes are viewed as furnishing preliminary support for a systemic interpretation of prison violence. Keywords
