Host Selection in Phytophagous Insects

Abstract
Discussion of this subject includes such headings as food-plant perception, food-plant finding, food-plant recognition, including visual, olfactory and gustatory stimuli, patterns of host plant selections, chemotactic classification of food plant preferences, review of antecedent theories, a revived catenary theory of host-plant selection, and insect resistance in plants. The author concludes that the extraordinary variety of insect-plant relationships is likely to be based on more diverse mechanisms than can be foreseen at present. The promise for rewards for investigators who approach the problem free of deeply rooted bias.
