Abstract
The energetics of the processes leading to the formation of excited monoxides of meteoric elements are examined. It is shown that formation of the excited molecules AlO, FeO, CaO and MgO may occur in an expanding meteor column and that the emission of their associated band systems provides a possible contributor to long-lived meteor train luminosity. Keywords
