Abstract
The origin of enamel drops and cementicles was studied in the continuously growing teeth of guinea pigs, rabbits and rats. Enamel drops are formed by active ameloblasts, detached from the surface of growing enamel matrix. Genuine cementicles originate from cemento-blasts, dislocated from primary cementum into periodontium, In the region of the peridontium, adjacent to that portion of the tooth covered with enamel, atypical cementum bodies (pseudo-cementicles) which have no connection with the origin of enamel drops and cementicles sometimes appear. The origin of free enamel drops shows that the presence of dentin is necessary only for the beginning of amelogenesis.
