Children's Reluctance Regarding Treatment: Incompetence, Resistance, or an Appropriate Response?

Abstract
Prevailing interpretations of minors' reluctance to participate in treatment tend to emphasize personal deficiencies, pathology, and inappropriate motivation. This review suggests (a) interpretations of reluctance for treatment may often be a function of the interpreter's biases and (b) reluctance may frequently result from appropriate negative perceptions of treatment by clients.
