Abstract
Two means of gaining access to power in complex societies are through the mobility of individuals or groups and through the use of power brokers. Based on a study of the national social structure of Guatemala, this paper presents the argument that the two forms tend to appear under different circumstances. Power brokers are in evidence where power domains are strong and levels of articulation are rigid; brokers disappear and mobility systems come into play where power domains become weak and levels become flexible. Keywords
