Abstract
Urinary free 21-hydroxy-19-nor-4-pregnen-3,20-dione (19-nor-DOC) excretion in male and female spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and the normotensive Wistar Kyoto (WKY) strain of rat was measured at weekly intervals from weaning (at 3 weeks of age) to 7 weeks of age. Excretion of this steroid was found to be elevated in both male and female SHR compared to WKY rats before the development of hypertension at 8 weeks of age. Urinary levels of 19-nor-DOC returned to WKY at levels 1 week earlier in the male SHR than in the female SHR The levels of 19-nor-DOC in female SHR returned to the level in the female WKY rat just before the onset of hypertension. Keywords
