Abstract
The theory of queues, or waiting lines, and Monte Carlo techniques are applied to the problem of selecting the optimal design of a single multi-purpose reservoir. The proposed uses for the reservoir are irrigation, hydroelectric power generation, and flood control. Simulation of the reservoir system response to hydrologic inflows is performed on a large-scale electronic digital computer. The technique of the application is demonstrated here by describing a typical numerical solution for the design of a multi-purpose reservoir to be built across a stream for which the inflow distribution (and appropriate parameters) are known. Keywords
