Determination of Amputation Level by Measurement of Skin Blood Flow

Abstract
To the Editor.—In November 1973 Archives (107:798), I published data correlating success or failure of healing in below-knee amputations with preoperative skin blood flows as measured by xenon Xe 133 clearance. In this report, I indicated that three amputations failed to heal because of ischemic necrosis and these three patients had the lowest blood flows measured at 0.55, 0.56, and 0.59 ml/100 gm of tissue per minute. I have just finished updating this information and noted that I committed a systematic error in transcribing the radioactive counts per minute from the strip chart recorder in preparation for the calculation of T ½ (T = time for a complete decade of radioactivity at the injection site). This did not change the relative flows of one patient to another, but did alter the absolute flow measure in each patient by about a factor of four.
