Abstract
A high-resolution (0.05 cm−1) Michelson interferometer mounted on a balloon-borne telescope has been used to observe the far-infrared fine-structure lines of O III, O I and N III at several positions in M42. These measurements have been combined with existing data to produce maps of this region in the oxygen lines. A map of the electron density as derived from the ratio of the two [O III] lines is also presented. There are insufficient observations of the [N III] line to be able to produce a map but it is noted that this line appears unusually bright at several points around the edge of the nebula. Keywords
