Supercooling in the various instars of the mealworm beetleTenebrio molitorL.

Abstract
The mean supercooling point of T. molitor pupae is significantly lower than that of larvae whose mean supercooling point is, in turn, significantly lower than that of adult beetles. Supercooling points are not significantly influenced either by acclimation or by the rate of cooling. Comparison with supercooling points recorded in previous work on subtropical and tropical desert Tenebrionidae supports the earlier conclusion that the ability to supercool is a preadaptation.
