Studies on the Permeability of the Oral Mucosa. 3. Transportation of Amino Acids

Abstract
Amino-acids were measured by the amount of CO2 determined by the manometric method. Glycine and L-histidine were not transported across the isolated oral mucosa (dog) even with high concentration gradients of amino-acids across the membrane for long periods of time at 37[degree]C. After application to the oral mucosa of cationic or anionic but not nonionic surface detergents glycine and L-histidine were transported across the membrane. The effects on permeability of the membrane were similar. Both ionic (greater) and nonionic surface detergents inhibited O2 consumption.
