Abstract
Distributed computing environments are now being built by interconnecting local area networks with high-speed, wide-area digital communication services such as T-1 and fraction T-1 carrier. Specialized, dedicated systems have been designed to satisfy a diverse set of requirements that are consistent with the design philosophies of computer systems and common carrier engineers. These requirements are outlined. The author highlights example implementations of these requirements in the design of a real-life integrated router-bridge.Keywords
