A Pendulating Model for Mechanisms With Clearances in the Revolutes

Abstract
A model is developed for evaluating impulsive forces and torques in mechanisms with clearances. It is built around the momentum-exchanges during impacts rather than following the traditional path of simulating the contacting surfaces by springs and dashpots. The spectrum of the impulses for a four bar mechanism is obtained for a number of cycles of the crank rotation. The model provides a proper design tool for investigating wear, life-expectancy, and noise characteristics of high-speed mechanisms with clearances.
