Karyotype Analysis of Species in SectionCerealiaof GenusHordeumwith Special Reference to their Interrelationships

Abstract
According to Stebbins' (1958) classification, asymmetrical karyotype of 3a type prevails in the genus Hordeum. In this paper an attempt has been made to evaluate the quantitative differences in the karyotypes of six diploid species of section Cerealia in the genus Hordeum utilizing generalized distance — D2 statistic. Karyotype measurements of H. agriocrithon and H. distichon were found to be most distant from each other and differed much from other four species as well. In contrast, H. spontaneum and H. vulgare had similar karyotypes. The significance of these observations is discussed.
