Abstract
The author presents an approach to the selection of an automatic pulmonary ventilator. The indications for automatic ventilators are set out and a guide to choice is then suggested on physiological and practical considerations. Many features of machines are discussed briefly and a rather high standard is put forward. The underlying emphasis throughout is that the clinician should be fully aware of his requirements and the limitations of apparatus, and that he makes his selection in this frame of mind. Keywords
