Abstract
Observations were made on cells from nutrient agar and d-glucose broth and agar made with normal and 8% heavy water. No changes were observed in cells from nutrient agar made with either normal or heavy water but changes were observed in cells from heavy water d-glucose agar. On the latter medium, normal cells grew into cells with pointed, club-shaped ends and other atypical forms. Atypical forms appeared as early as the 4th hr. after transfer. Internally, granulation was conspicuous, as compared to cells from controls. Bud-like structures were observed on cells from heavy water d-glucose cultures. Fermentation reactions after growth in heavy water were unchanged. Cells from old heavy water cultures failed to grow on agar slants but did grow in broth. Keywords
