Abstract
In two recent papers [1, 2] constitutive relationships were described which were based upon a theory of creep originally postulated by Bailey [3] and Orowan [4] and which has been subjected to tests by Mitra and McLean [5]. Here displacement and work bounds are derived from the general theory of the authors [6, 7] for a body subjected to variable thermal and mechanical loading. Special cases are discussed, including isotropic-hardening plasticity and the bounds are related to certain elementary continuum problems. For cyclic loading the bounds relate to the exact solution when the cycle time is small compared with characteristic material times. Keywords
