Phytotropins V. The Effect of 1-(2′-carboxyphenyl)-3-phenylpropane-1,3-dione on the Root and Root Cap ofZea maysL.

Abstract
Treatment of the primary root of Zea mays L. with the phytotropin 1-(2′-carboxyphenyl)-3-phenylpropane-1, 3-dione (CPD) gave rise to nastic curvature, loss of georesponse, and root growth inhibition. From these results and a histological examination of the root cap, it is suggested that interference with the perception mechanism may not be a factor in the mode of action of CPD. The results may be explained in terms of the known hormone transport inhibiting properties of the phytotropins.
