Abstract
X-ray diffraction patterns have been obtained from liquid Br2 near the freezing point. Of the six scattering factors reported, the James—Brindley scattering factor was determined to be the one which compared most favorably with the experimental intensity. The intensity functions have been analyzed to yield electronic, atomic and molecular radial distribution functions. These show one atomic nearest neighbor at 2.3 Å and 12 molecules in two concentrations at 4.06 and 5.66 Å. The molecular pair correlation function, g(r)≡ρ/ρ0, for Br2 compares favorably to those for xenon and random-packed spheres beyond about one molecular diameter. The isothermal compressibility was determined from these data to be 14.5×10−11 cm2/dyn.Keywords
