Abstract
Thirty structural sections in the northern Apennines (Italy) are described and discussed with reference to the tectonic forces that acted upon them. Deformations from pre-Tortonian through upper Miocene and probably into the Pliocene oriented structures in such a way that present strike directions are indicative of identifiable stages of movement. The study leads to the conclusion that nappes are the result of overthrusting rather than gravitational sliding.
