Abstract
A review of the literature on the phantom limb is presented. The psychogenic as well as the organic theories of etiology of painful phantom are critically discussed. The organic concept includes the peripheral as well as the central origin of the phantom, also a combination of peripheral and central sources. The results of the various methods of treatment based on these concepts are described. The author offers a new concept of etiology, that of loss of function, and stresses the need for early restoration of function. Keywords
