Paraprofessional Versus Professional Drug Counselors: The Progress of Clients in Treatment

Abstract
The progress in treatment of 302 methadone maintenance and drug-free outpatient clients was examined as a function of the background of their 82 counselors. Counselors were either ex-addict paraprofessionals (EXA), non-ex-addict paraprofessionals (NEA) or degreed professional counselors (PRO). Client progress was assessed in 5 areas: drug use, criminality, educational activities, employment and life quality. In the first 4 areas, status at treatment entry contrasted with that at 2 subsequent measurement points: the 1st interview and a 4-mo. follow-up. In no area of evaluation were outcomes substantially more favorable for clients of 1 counselor group over another. The 3 counselor groups were equally effective.
