METABOLIC FACTORS IN OXYGEN POISONING

Abstract
Hypothyroidism lengthens the time of onset of the convulsive seizure and decreases the cumulative neurologic damage; hyperthyroidism increases the sensitivity of the animal. Increase or decrease of the environmental temp. by about 20[degree]C. has no effect on the seizure. Either increase or decrease of the body (rectal) temp. reduces the time of onset of the seizure. Kittens are less sensitive to O2 poisoning than adult cats. The rectal temp. is raised slightly during the seizure; it falls only as the animal becomes moribund. Drugs which depress cortical activity delay the onset of the convulsion. A convulsant drug (metrazol) accelerates it. The results point to a profound effect of changes in metabolism on the convulsive seizure of O2 poisoning.
