Porosity of Gladiolus Stigmatic Papillae and Pollen Tube Walls

Abstract
The effective pore size of the cell walls of Gladiolus pollen tubes (grown in vitro) and stigmatic palpillae has been examined by the solute-exclusion technique. The estimated pore size in 3.5–4.5 nm which is similar to that reported for other cell types, but is smaller than that of wall channels which have been demonstrated in stigmatic papillae by freeze-fracture studies. Within a sample of pollen tubes or stigmatic papillae there are wide variations in the response to the solute exclusion tests, suggesting variation in the wall structure of individual cells.
