Abstract
The most common radiological “complication” of chronic otitis is the formation of a cholesteatoma. This gives rise to bone destruction, sometimes resulting in a perforation into the cranial cavity or into the labyrinth via a fistula of the osseous capsule (4, 11, 13–15). Labyrinthine fistulas have been demonstrated by means of conventional radiography (13). Psenner (12), however, claims that conventional technic only seldom leads to this diagnosis, and if so, by mere luck. Since the introduction of tomography in ear disease, the chances of establishing the diagnosis radiologically have improved (9). At Rigshospitalet (University Clinics), Copenhagen, Denmark, we have performed preoperative tomography since 1962 in almost all patients with infectious ear diseases, in whom operation was considered. Material In a review of the files of the Ear, Nose, and Throat and the Radiological Departments, we selected 13 cases with the radiological and/or the clinical diagnosis of labyrinthine fistula.
